Per Capita Explained
All churches in the Presbyterian Church, USA are given an annual goal to provide funds in support of our church government; our presbytery, our synod and our general assembly. Per capita is the term given to this goal. As part of our annual budgeting process, consideration is given to providing this support.
To determine the amount, the member roster total of each church is used and a per-member amount is determined to arrive at a total annual dollar amount. The annual amount of per capita is determined at three levels.
1.) amount needed to support the church at the General Assembly level. For 2011 this amount is $ 6.50 per active member.
2.) at the synod level (Synod of the Covenant) the amount is $3.25.
3.) our Scioto Valley Presbytery amount is $24.09.
The combined total is $33.84 per member. Multiplying this number by our 2010 active member roster of about 1946 members, we total $65,852.64 (quarterly installments of $16,463.16.) We actively monitor our roster. As the largest church congregation in the Scioto Valley Presbytery, our contribution is the largest in our presbytery. As a church, we also provide many intangible volunteer efforts to our presbytery in our ministries and missions. As we strive to be good stewards of God’s gifts to us, we pray that this amount will be applied for God’s purposes to expand his kingdom in our world. Each year we provide through our offering envelopes an opportunity for each member to specifically donate to cover this per capita budget line item. Contributions specified for this purpose are gratefully accepted throughout the year.
